In this digital world of tweeting, liking, hashtagging, and ‘emoticondamonion,’ sometimes it seems that students have lost the art of talking to people. I mean real people, face-to face! In the UVic Social Sciences Co-op Programs, we have decided to rebel. Instead of focussing on social media and requiring online profiles in the context of networking, we have started to challenge our students with meeting new people. Yes, real people, on buses, in planes, at events, in any place! We then require them to complete a simple reflective assignment. The results have been inspiring and useful. Upon reflection, students report all sort of perceptions about the concept of networking - concepts that they would never have believed if we simply told them so. This presentation will provide an overview on the assignment and the outcomes.
